Visual Effects Supervisor
He went on to work on music videos, industrial film, commercials and European cinema before joining Wētā FX in 2003 as a compositor on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Simon worked as a lead compositor on Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 and his credits also include some of Wētā FX’s most high profile projects such as Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Hobbit trilogy and Alita: Battle Angel.
He was Compositing Supervisor and Animation Supervisor on David Lowery’s The Green Knight.
Most recently, in his role as Visual Effects Supervisor, Simon led Wētā’s work on the HBO series The Last of Us, bringing the iconic creatures to life against a post-apocalyptic US backdrop. This work earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and a Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Episode.
Simon has also been nominated for a VES award five times prior, in 2012 for his compositing work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, in 2013 for Created Environment for his work on the Goblin Caverns featured in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in 2015 for Compositing in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and in 2020 for Virtual Cinematography in Alita: Battle Angel.
