A substance designed to help the brain repair itself, gives rise to a super-intelligent chimp, Caesar, who leads an ape uprising. Weta Digital integrated their progressive performance capture set up into the live-action, enabling a new level of intimacy between digital and live characters.
It’s the first live-action film to have a photo-realistic digital character as the emotional centre of the film. Bringing apes with intelligence and emotional resonance to the screen has successfully carved out a new standard and a new era in the realistic animation of non-human lead characters.
Caesar is an amazing character not because you’re constantly admiring the technical artistry in creating him, but because you forget that any technical artistry went into creating him at all.
